Description
Gum Arabic (Acacia gum) - Approx 250g
It’s a natural soluble fibre harvested from the sap of Acacia trees. It has been used traditionally in parts of Africa and the Middle East for centuries and is also used in many foods and drinks as a stabiliser.
Some of its potential benefits are backed by research, while others are based more on traditional use.
1. Excellent source of soluble fibre
This is its best-established benefit. Gum arabic is almost entirely soluble fibre, which can:
* Support healthy digestion.
* Help maintain regular bowel movements.
* Feed beneficial gut bacteria (it acts as a prebiotic).
* Increase feelings of fullness, which may help with appetite control.
2. Supports gut health
Because it feeds beneficial bacteria, studies suggest it may increase populations of bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus. A healthier gut microbiome may contribute to:
* Better digestion.
* Improved immune function.
* Reduced gut inflammation.
3. May help regulate blood sugar
Soluble fibre slows the absorption of carbohydrates, which may help reduce blood sugar spikes after meals. It should not replace diabetes treatment but may be a useful dietary addition.
4. May help lower cholesterol
Some studies have found modest reductions in LDL (“bad”) cholesterol when gum arabic is consumed regularly as part of a healthy diet.
5. May support kidney health
Research has explored gum arabic as a supplement in people with chronic kidney disease because it may help reduce certain waste products and improve bowel elimination. However, this should only be used under medical supervision in people with kidney disease.
6. May aid weight management
Because it’s high in fibre, it may:
* Reduce hunger.
* Increase satiety.
* Help decrease overall calorie intake.
How is it usually taken?
Many people dissolve it in:
* A glass of water.
* Tea.
* Smoothies.
* Fresh juice.
Typical research doses range from 10–30 g per day, often starting lower (around 5 g) and increasing gradually to minimise bloating.
Possible side effects
When starting it, some people experience:
* Gas.
* Bloating.
* Mild abdominal discomfort.
These symptoms usually improve as the gut adapts. It’s also important to drink enough water because of its high fibre content.
Is it safe?
For most healthy adults, gum arabic is considered safe when consumed in food amounts and is generally well tolerated as a fibre supplement. If you have:
* Severe digestive disorders,
* Chronic kidney disease,
* Or take medications where fibre could affect absorption,
it’s best to discuss regular supplementation with your healthcare provider.
