The stories of God’s Prophets have been central to the Qur’ānic philosophy of history. Whilst the Qur’ān is not a book of history, its depiction of history has been centered on the stories of the most revered of His creation. In other words, God Almighty could have selected any of the millions of narratives from history to engage His subjects. However, He decreed to exhibit the narratives of His choicest servants as a means of illuminating the reader to the endless possibilities one may achieve in this life, and of course in the next.

Ismail Ibn Katheer was a highly influential historian, exegete and scholar. He was truly an expert on tafsir (Quranic exegesis) and faqih (jurisprudence), he wrote many great books. In later life, he became blind. He attributes his blindness to working late at night on the Musnad of Ahmad Ibn Hanbal in an attempt to rearrange it topically rather than by narrator. He died in February 1373 (AH 774) in Damascus. He was buried next to his teacher. The stories of the prophets and all the events in their lives have been supported by the Qur'anic Verses and the Sunnah (traditions) of the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him). In this edition of the book, we have added many Quranic verses in Arabic. The Quran tells us about many of Allah's prophets. Prophet Adam is mentioned in six suras of the Quran. Allah taught Adam many things so that Adam had more knowledge than the angels. There was one Jinn, called Iblis, the Devil. Iblis tried to compare himself to Adam. He believed that he was more honorable than Adam. Therefore he abstained from prostrating even though Allah had commanded him to do so. Adam was surprised by this creature, Iblis who abhorred him without even knowing him and who imagined himself better than Adam without having proved that he was worthier. Allah gives His commissioned creatures' absolute freedom even to the extent that they can refuse His commands. Allah grants them the freedom of denial, disobedience, and even disagreement with Him. His kingdom will not diminish if the disbelievers do not believe in Him nor will it be extended if many people believe in Him.

As a non Muslim myself, I appreciate the fact that I got immediate translations of words and phrases that I have often heard in relation to the Islamic faith.I don’t have any major grouses with the book, but at certain places I did wish the book had footnotes to give a more detailed history about certain items mentioned in the passages. Though the language used and the sentence structuring is contemporary, it has its own poetic feel. But if you are looking for a genuine Arabic poetic rendering, that you won’t find it here.The introduction given by the author was an honest piece of writing and my heart went out to him that he was able to make such a divine connection with the almighty. I would highly recommend this book to my Muslim brothers and sisters who think that they already know enough about their religion and faith. Reading this book should give you a different perspective and bring you in harmony with God.
