About The Author
Professor Dr Muhammad Hamidullah : widely known across the Islamic world, in the Indian subcontinent and in Europe and North America for his seminal and outstanding contributions to the advancement of Islamic learning and to the dissemination of Islamic teachings in the Western world,
Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah was born in 1908 (Feb 19, 1908 / 16 Muharram 1326) and he obtained several degrees in Theology and Law from Osmania University in the state of Hyderabad Deccan (India). He also studied in Germany and France where he received his PhD degrees (he had more than one PhD) in International Law. He was a law professor in his native city. He then settled in France but later moved to the United States in 1996. The professor never married. He had been taken care of by the grand-daughter of his brother.
His book, Introduction to Islam, was translated into at least a dozen languages and it became so popular that it is used as a textbook in Russia as well as other countries. His book, The Muslim Conduct of State, was a groundbreaking work in Muslim International Law. A series of his lectures, delivered at Bhawalpur, Pakistan, were translated into English, under the title of Emergence of Islam and it is also very popular among his other original works.
Dr. Hamidullah passed away on Dec 17, 2002, in Jacksonville, FL in his sleep after praying Fajr at the home of his host sister Sadida who is his brother's granddaughter. He was 94 years old. His funeral prayers were led by a Turkish-American scholar Dr. Yusuf Ziya Kavakci, Imam Islamic Association of North Texas.
About The Book
The Handbook of Islam, Iman and Ihsan is a manual on how to establish Islam, with understanding, by the famous West African Shaykh who led the jihad (struggle in the way of Allah) which established the Muslim Khalifate in Northern Nigeria in the 18th century.
The very title of this book is illuminating, for this is the three-dimensional Islam that emerged from Madinah and was the light for the whole of the west, from the Bilad as-Sudan, including Nigeria, right up to Andalus, modern-day Spain, an Islam that holds law, spirituality and a clear intellectual tradition in balance.
This book then is another manual, a handbook on the practice of Islam, on the parameters of what needs to be known about Allah and His Messengers, and on the Sufic path of purification of the heart and self from the qualities that obscure their luminous reality and which veil them from Allah.
About Uthman dan Fodio
Shaykh Usman was born into a highly cultured family in 1168/1754. His father was Muhammad ibn Salih, known generally as Fodio. His mother was Hawwa bint Muhammad ibn Usman. The Shaykh read the Qur’an with his father, learned al-Ishriniyyah and similar works with his shaykh, ‘Uthman, known as Biddu al-Kabawi.
He learned syntax and the science of grammar from al-Khulāsah and other works at the hand of Shaykh ‘Abd ar-Rahman ibn Hammada. He read al-Mukhtasar with his paternal and maternal uncle, Uthmān, known as Bidduri. Later he learnt from a number of shaykhs, most significantly Jibril ibn ‘Umar, the major collections of hadith, fiqh and tasawwuf.
He led a movement for the renewal of Islam in west Africa and founded a caliphate, establishing all the offices of a functioning polity, in the process writing a large number of books on the various issues confronting his people at the various points of their struggle. Among the most famous are his Ihya as-Sunna.

Hopelik sal dit ‘n stap wees om die Qur’an in die Arabiese taal te verstaan; en daardeur sal u die juwele van Islam, die instruksies vir die korrekte en edele lewenskode, en sy leiding en wysheid, van geen ander bron as die Heilige Qur’an in die oorspronklike Arabies verkry nie, Insha Allah (met Godswil).
The Quran, a book which brings glad tidings to mankind along with divine admonition, stresses the importance of man’s discovery of truth on both spiritual and intellectual planes. Imam Tahawi's al-Aqidah, representative of the viewpoint of ahl-al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah, has long been the most widely acclaimed, and indeed indispensable, reference-work on Muslim beliefs.
Being a text on Islamic doctrines, this work draws heavily on arguments set forth in the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah. Likewise, the arguments advanced in refuting the views of sects that have deviated from the Sunnah are also taken from the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah. It contains references to views of the Shi'ah, Khawarij and such mystics that had departed from the right path.
There is an explicit reference in the work to the non-sensical controversy on khalq-al- Qur'an in the times of Ma'mun and some other 'Abbasid Caliphs.

Imam Abu Ja'far Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Salamah bin Salmah bin 'Abd al Malik bin Salmah bin Sulaim bin Sulaiman bin Jawab Azdi, popularly known as Imam Tahawi, after his birth-place in Egypt, is among the most outstanding authorities of the Islamic world on Hadith and fiqh (jurisprudence).
He lived 239-321 A.H., an epoch when both the direct and indirect disciples of the four Imams - Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Malik, Imam Shafi'i and Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal - were teaching and practicing.
This period was the zenith of Hadith and fiqh studies, and Imam Tahawi studied with all the living authorities of the day.
He began as a student of his maternal uncle, Isma'il bin Yahya Muzni, a leading disciple of Imam Shafi'i.
Instinctively, however, Imam Tahawi felt drawn to the corpus of Imam Abu Hanifah's works.
Indeed, he had seen his uncle and teacher turning to the works of Hanafi scholars to resolve thorny issues of Fiqh, drawing heavily on the writings of Imam Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani and Imam Abu Yusuf, who had codified Hanafi fiqh.
This led Imam Tahawi to devote his whole attention to studying the Hanafi works and he eventually joined the Hanafi school.
Imam Tahawi stands out not only as a prominent follower of the Hanafi school but, in view of his vast erudition and remarkable powers of assimilation, as one of its leading scholars.
His monumental scholarly works, such as Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar and Mushkil al-Athar, are encyclopaedic in scope and have long been regarded as indispensable for training students of fiqh.
