  • Islam to the Modern Mind

    Islam to the Modern Mind

Islam to the Modern Mind draws from the lectures the eminent scholar gave in South Africa in 1970 and 1972, and deals with three broad themes; a deeper understanding of the basic principles of Islam, an Islamic response to the intellectual challenges of the twentieth century, and the methodology of Islamic spirituality.   Mawlana Ansari was able to marry the inner technology of Islamic spirituality with the outer technology of modern science to produce a beautiful and noble example for Muslims to follow. As the twentieth century draws to close, his teachings are evermore relevant. The editors and publishers of Islam to the Modern Mind should be greatly commended for making available these valuable and thought-provoking discourses for a new generation of readers.

  • HANDBOOK ON ISLAM HANDBOOK ON ISLAM

    HANDBOOK ON ISLAM

About The Book The Handbook of Islam, Iman and Ihsan is a manual on how to establish Islam, with understanding, by the famous West African Shaykh who led the jihad (struggle in the way of Allah) which established the Muslim Khalifate in Northern Nigeria in the 18th century. The very title of this book is illuminating, for this is the three-dimensional Islam that emerged from Madinah and was the light for the whole of the west, from the Bilad as-Sudan, including Nigeria, right up to Andalus, modern-day Spain, an Islam that holds law, spirituality and a clear intellectual tradition in balance. This book then is another manual, a handbook on the practice of Islam, on the parameters of what needs to be known about Allah and His Messengers, and on the Sufic path of purification of the heart and self from the qualities that obscure their luminous reality and which veil them from Allah. About Uthman dan Fodio Shaykh Usman was born into a highly cultured family in 1168/1754. His father was Muhammad ibn Salih, known generally as Fodio. His mother was Hawwa bint Muhammad ibn Usman. The Shaykh read the Qur’an with his father, learned al-Ishriniyyah and similar works with his shaykh, ‘Uthman, known as Biddu al-Kabawi. He learned syntax and the science of grammar from al-Khulāsah and other works at the hand of Shaykh ‘Abd ar-Rahman ibn Hammada. He read al-Mukhtasar with his paternal and maternal uncle, Uthmān, known as Bidduri. Later he learnt from a number of shaykhs, most significantly Jibril ibn ‘Umar, the major collections of hadith, fiqh and tasawwuf. He led a movement for the renewal of Islam in west Africa and founded a caliphate, establishing all the offices of a functioning polity, in the process writing a large number of books on the various issues confronting his people at the various points of their struggle. Among the most famous are his Ihya as-Sunna.

    English Quran

The Quran, a book which brings glad tidings to mankind along with divine admonition, stresses the importance of man’s discovery of truth on both spiritual and intellectual planes. Every book has its objective and the objective of the Quran is to make man aware of the Creation plan of God. That is, to tell man why God created this world; what the purpose is of settling man on earth; what is required from man in his pre-death life span, and what he is going to confront after death. The purpose of the Quran is to make man aware of this reality, thus serving to guide man on his entire journey through life into the after-life. The main themes of the Quran are enlightenment, closeness to God, peace and spirituality. The Quran uses several terms, tawassum, tadabbur, and tafakkur, which indicate the learning of lessons through reflection, thinking and contemplation on the signs of God scattered across the world. The present translation of the Quran and its explanatory notes are written keeping in mind these very themes. Published by Goodword Books

  • Our Story Animals in the Quran

Our Story Animals in the Quran

What if the crow who showed Cain how to bury Abel was returning from a justice council with the corpse of a condemned and executed fellow crow? Ahmad Bahjat imagines this scenario and others in the wildly inventive tales he collects in Our Story. Bahjat envisions animal lives and communities as complete as human ones, and he retells the familiar stories of the prophets through this new lens, adding a layer of illuminating viewpoints to the well-known stories. No one has been able to ask Salih’s camel what she thought of the disbelievers’ refutations, but through Bahjat’s creative and insightful tales, we can now conjecture. A feat of imagination and elaborate world building, these stories combine a Muslim’s love of the prophets and a desire to follow them with the recognition that humanity is not alone on this earth. Our Story provides a new frame of reference for our most beloved childhood stories.

Matn Al-Aqidah at-Tahawiah: Arabic By Imam Tahawi

About The Book  Imam Tahawi's al-Aqidah, representative of the viewpoint of ahl-al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah, has long been the most widely acclaimed, and indeed indispensable, reference-work on Muslim beliefs.  Being a text on Islamic doctrines, this work draws heavily on arguments set forth in the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah. Likewise, the arguments advanced in refuting the views of sects that have deviated from the Sunnah are also taken from the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah. It contains references to views of the Shi'ah, Khawarij and such mystics that had departed from the right path.  There is an explicit reference in the work to the non-sensical controversy on khalq-al- Qur'an in the times of Ma'mun and some other 'Abbasid Caliphs.  While the permanent relevance of the statements of belief in al-Aqidah is obvious, the historical weight of these statements can only be properly appreciated if the work is used as a study text under the guidance of some learned person able to highlight its arguments fully.  Such a study will help one understand Islamic doctrines better and avoid deviations. This Book is Without Tashkeel or Vowels About The Author Imam Abu Ja'far Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Salamah bin Salmah bin 'Abd al Malik bin Salmah bin Sulaim bin Sulaiman bin Jawab Azdi, popularly known as Imam Tahawi, after his birth-place in Egypt, is among the most outstanding authorities of the Islamic world on Hadith and fiqh (jurisprudence).  He lived 239-321 A.H., an epoch when both the direct and indirect disciples of the four Imams - Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Malik, Imam Shafi'i and Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal - were teaching and practicing.  This period was the zenith of Hadith and fiqh studies, and Imam Tahawi studied with all the living authorities of the day.  He began as a student of his maternal uncle, Isma'il bin Yahya Muzni, a leading disciple of Imam Shafi'i.  Instinctively, however, Imam Tahawi felt drawn to the corpus of Imam Abu Hanifah's works.  Indeed, he had seen his uncle and teacher turning to the works of Hanafi scholars to resolve thorny issues of Fiqh, drawing heavily on the writings of Imam Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani and Imam Abu Yusuf, who had codified Hanafi fiqh.  This led Imam Tahawi to devote his whole attention to studying the Hanafi works and he eventually joined the Hanafi school. Imam Tahawi stands out not only as a prominent follower of the Hanafi school but, in view of his vast erudition and remarkable powers of assimilation, as one of its leading scholars.  His monumental scholarly works, such as Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar and Mushkil al-Athar, are encyclopaedic in scope and have long been regarded as indispensable for training students of fiqh.
